History

It all began in 1867. Senior Baines (b.1845) from Barrow in Rutland went to London to learn the baking trade and on his return, at the age of 21, founded Baines Bakery on School Lane, Uppingham (now part of the music department at Uppingham School). 

His passion for the trade was passed on to his son Edward Senior Baines (b.1874-1953) and he carried on the running of the business in 1901. He moved the bakery around the corner to it's current premises on High Street West. In the same year he won the Gold Medal Bread award. He also won a national association of Master Bakers competition, of which the certificate is still on the wall in the shop now.
